Tomewin Serenity Oils are handcrafted aromatherapy product blends using 100% pure essential oils, high quality cosmetic grade & locally grown macadamia oil and a light hypo-allergenic base cream, blended by myself, a Qualified Aromatherapist, Masseuse & Trainer.
My name is Karen Court and I have been practising Aromatherapy for 19 years under the registered name of Tomewin Serenity Oils. Tomewin is where I live in the northern NSW hinterland behind the Gold Coast. It is a beautiful 97 hectare rainforest with fresh water streams and clean air.
I have a Certificate in Aromatherapy, a Diploma of Swedish Massage, Anatomy & Physiology and a Statement of Attainment for Deep Tissue Therapies. I also have a Certificate IV in Training and Workplace Assessment.
In my role as an Aromatherapist, I have been working in the aged care industry for the past 10 years with the UPA (United Protestant Association) and as a Staff Trainer for Aged Care for the past 4 years. I operated my own aromatherapy clinic at Greenhills Lodge, (aged care facility) in Murwillumbah for over 5 years and have worked in the field for the CAPS (Community Aged Care Program) for a further 4 years, providing elderly clients aromatherapy treatments in their own homes. In 2005, I won an industry award given by the ACS (Aged & Community Services of NSW & ACT) for excellence in the field of Aromatherapy for Team Community Care.
During my time working with the elderly, I produced a range of aromatherapy products aimed at relieving common elderly health complaints eg. poor skin integrity, arthritic pain, sleeping difficulties, grieving and depression and anxiety. These products (therapeutic oils, creams and room spritzers) were used within the facility and during my massage treatments with the residents. No reports were made of any negative side-effects. These products are still in use today by the clients and staff of the UPA (United Protestant Association) and the Community Aged Care Service.
Being a specialist in the Aged Care field of Aromatherapy Products and Treatments, I have been a part of the yearly Senior Citizens Expo in Murwillumbah for the past 10 years. This has enabled me to spread my knowledge of aromatherapy products to the elderly and the wider community and assist them in giving relief for their ailments.
For the past 3 years I have been providing information sessions for the Encore Program in NSW which deals with women with breast cancer. I, myself being a breast cancer survivor, have been able to assist these women in finding relief from their trauma and chemical side effects using my natural aromatherapy products.
In July 2011, I decided to launch a new Aromatherapy Beauty Product Range in response to requests being made by my peers and also coinciding with the opening of a beauty salon by a friend. Product development occurred over a nine month period whereby I trialled my new product recipes on my circle of friends and colleagues. I made improvements through their evaluations and I am now confident that these products will suit the wider market for men, women and teenagers alike. The success of this part of my business has been so exciting, that I now feel I am ready to offer these products to Australia via my new website.
I have been using glass jars and bottles for therapeutic products for 20 years, but recently recyclable P.E.T plastic bottles have become available which are specifically designed for the aromatherapy market. Many essential oils used for aromatherapy require a strong bottle that does not leak, nor ‘panels’ due to the plastic’s reaction with the oils. This is especially prevalent in polyethylene plastic bottles. Glass has the problems of breakage during freighting and their weight adds significantly to postage costs. I am able to provide both glass and P.E.T bottles for my products.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conclude that PET recyclable plastic bottles are more environmentally sustainable than glass. The LCA concludes that using PET bottles instead of glass can decrease Global Warming Potential (GWP) by 14% and reduce the use of fossil resources by 23%.
What is Holistic Aromatherapy?
Holistic aromatherapy is a pleasurable and effective therapy. Its popularity stems in part from the individual’s use of two major senses – touch and smell. The distinctive healing power of holistic aromatherapy lies in the pharmacology of the chosen essential oils, the use of massage and other aromatherapy methods, the aromatherapist’s relationship with each client and professional knowledge about the complexity of health, wellbeing, and problems accompanying illness and ill health and the ability to select and provide aromatherapy treatments appropriate to each person’s needs and total wellbeing.
Aromatherapy practice uses scientific knowledge, skills and art to influence and change the mind, body and/or spirit positively with the aim of promoting health and wellbeing. Some essential oils have a direct therapeutic effect on the physical body relaxing muscles, stimulating or balancing organ functioning or promoting tissue healing through the powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral and cell regenerating properties of some oils. Other oils have a profound effect on the mind, mental activity and the person’s sense of wellbeing by effectively relieving stress, elevating depressed mood, inducing relaxation and sleep, or energising and promoting concentration.
